Professional Development Events

The KidsMatter Calendar provides details of FREE KidsMatter professional development events for school staff. The events have been specially designed to take schools through the process of implementing KidsMatter.

Health and community professionals are also welcome to attend events to support their work with schools towards improving children’s mental health and wellbeing.We encourage you to explore the health and community area of the KidsMatter website for additional information.

KidsMatter Primary Briefing

Briefings are geared towards informing school leaders about KidsMatter, but also provide a general introduction for health and community professionals to the initiative and how it works in schools. A focus is given to the importance of gaining the support of the school staff and parent body. It provides all the information schools need to make a decision about participating in KidsMatter.

Getting Started for Action Teams

This session provides information about the content of KidsMatter, its underpinning mental health concepts and processes and tools for aiding implementation of KidsMatter while supporting school priorities and strategic planning. Schools receive all the resources to begin the KidsMatter journey.

Facilitating Component 1: Positive school community

This event familiarises participants with the target areas of Component 1 focusing on a school community that promotes mental health and well-being, and developing respectful relationships, belonging and inclusion. It also considers whole school staff processes and prepares participants to effectively deliver the professional learning to the staff group.

Facilitating Component 2: Social and emotional learning for students

This event familiarises participants with the target areas of Component 2 focusing on providing effective social and emotional learning (SEL) curriculum and the opportunities for all students to practise and transfer their social and emotional skills. It also considers whole school staff processes and prepares participants to effectively deliver the professional learning to the staff group.

Facilitating Component 3: Working with parents and carers

This event familiarises participants with the target areas of Component 3 focusing on developing collaborative working relationships and support networks with parents and carers, and providing support for parenting. It also considers whole school staff processes and prepares participants to effectively deliver the professional learning to the staff group. It is recommended that School Action Teams partner with an appropriate parenting support or mental health professional in the delivery of Component 3.

Facilitating Component 4: Helping students experiencing mental health difficulties

This event familiarises participants with the target areas of Component 4 focusing on understanding mental health difficulties, and developing strategies to improve help-seeking and recognise students who may be experiencing mental health difficulties. It also considers whole school staff processes and prepares participants to effectively deliver the professional learning to the staff group. It is recommended that School Action Teams partner with an appropriate parenting support or mental health professional in the delivery of Component 4.

Implementation support and network meeting

These workshops provide an opportunity for sharing of experiences in implementing KidsMatter. In addition to building networks and collegial support, these workshops also provide additional professional learning and support from KidsMatter staff to enhance the implementation process. Health and community professionals working with schools are also welcome to attend.
